The synopsis led me to believe “Something’s Amiss” would be just another gentle romantic novel.
The blurb:
Oliver never thought he'd see his ex step foot in Rhode Island again. But, Poe returns a year later to pay her respects for the loss of Jenna. Deciding life's too short, he plans to fight for what he wants. Can he convince Poe to give him a second chance? Or will old resentments resurface?
Poe gets an unexpected surprise when she's able to bond with Jenna's young daughter, Raven. And, for a long time, she thought her ex hated her. Soon, Poe realizes, maybe she was wrong. How wrong!
Women's Fiction
Romance
My thoughts:
The story begins with Oliver contacting Poe for the first time since she moved to Pittsburgh, to tell her that his cousin, who is also her best friend, Jenna, had died. Poe goes to Rhode Island for the funeral and is met at the airport by Oliver, where we learn that they are still have feelings for each other. This was not a light-hearted read. The reason the two lead characters have come together is for a very sad occasion, and I felt the loss of Jenna without ever meeting her.
The drama is played out in the days leading up to Jenna’s funeral. Poe comes to realise that she and Oliver both still love each other, and perhaps she is not as hopeless with children as she imagined.
The characters felt very real and relatable, but not all of them are likeable. I loathed both Kate and Bradley: Kate for her jealousy and selfishness and Bradley because he is a player. Neither reined in their behaviour, making me feel they did not care about Jenna or the other grieving family members.
“Something’s Amiss” was an enjoyable read, and I look forward to reading more of Yawatta Hosby’s stories.
