My thoughts:
Belonging opens with Harriet returning home after a night out. She has been trying to obliterate a painful truth by regularly drinking to excess. Harriet has suffered several losses in her life, including the loss of a baby. Although she is shocked by her own behaviour as result of her heavy drinking, she has not, so far, been able to get her life back on track. That changes when Niamh, her deceased boyfriend's teenaged daughter unexpectedly turns up, having run away from home. Niamh needs to talk about her dad, and, as her mother, Mel, refuses to talk about him, Harriet is her best hope. Niamh's uncle, Tim, arrives to collect her from Harriet, and friendships develop which make Harriet hope for the future.I thought this was a beautifully told tale about bereavement and letting go. I particularly felt Niamh's pain as a young teenager who had lost her father and needed to talk that loss out with someone, but I could also relate to Harriet's situation, and was pleased for her, that she had the determination to pull herself together, get her life back on track, and consider the possibility of a new relationship.
I loved this story! It's a truly captivating read. I have already downloaded Girl at Christmas because I so much enjoyed Belonging, and I have Snowed In on my radar, as this is where we first meet Harriet, and I've grown rather fond of her!

 Rhoda Baxter writes contemporary romances with heart and a touch of cynicism. She has had several novels published by the award winning publisher Choc Lit. Writing under her other pen name, Jeevani Charika, she has been published by Bonnier Zaffre. Her books have been shortlisted for awards such as the RoNA Romantic Comedy of the Year (in 2017), Love Stories Award (in 2015) and the Joan Hessayon Award (2012). Rhoda started off as a microbiologist and then drifted out of research and into technology transfer. When choosing a penname, she was hit by a fit of nostalgia and named herself after the bacterium she studied during her PhD. She has lived in a variety of places including Sri Lanka, Yap (it’s a real place), Halifax, Oxford and Didcot (also a real place). She tends to judge the standard of living by the quality and availability of tea and cake. She now lives with her young family in East Yorkshire, where the tea and cake provision is excellent.
