The blurb:
A Little Christmas Charm
Would you swap sea and sunshine for tinsel and turkey?
Gabby Sanderson is used to being let down – even at Christmas. Which is why she’s happy to skip the festive season completely in favour of a plane ticket and sunnier climes.
But this Christmas could be different, because this time she might not be spending it alone. Can Owen Cooper charm Gabby into loving Christmas in the same way he’s charmed his way into her life, or is he just another person who’ll end up disappointing her?
Holiday Fiction
Holiday Romance
My thoughts:
Although this is the second book in the Christmas Wishes series, it can easily be read as a standalone. The story is told around Gabby Sanderson and Owen Cooper who are work colleagues. They start tentatively dating and have decided to go on holiday at Christmas together.
Naturally, the world and his wife conspire to prevent them going away together. We watch as Gabby learns to trust Owen, having been let down so often in her life by people who should have been there for her, and how Owen realises he is now ready for a fully-committed relationship.
This is a well-written, happy-ending story, which evoked great sympathy in me for Owen when he had to make choices which he knew could negatively effect his relationship with Gabby. I was also deeply suspicious of the sudden and unexpected arrival of Gabby's mother, and assumed she had an ulterior motive for turning up just before Christmas.
There are some interesting secondary characters such as Owen's PA Hilda and Sidney, Owen's father. Hilda is introduced as a humorlessly efficient, older PA and Sidney as a grumpy old widower. But this is not what their true natures are, and we see them soften as their friendship develops. In fact they are both lonely but have built walls against being seen to be lonely. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing these two begin to enjoy the season because they were no longer alone.
A heart-warming story which would be a great read, any time of the year.

A former pharmacist, I’m now a medical writer who also writes romance. Some days a racing heart is a medical condition, others it’s the reaction to a hunky hero. With two teenage boys and a husband who asks every Valentine’s Day whether he has to buy a card (yes, he does), any romance is all in my head. Then again, his unstinting support of my career change proves love isn't always about hearts and flowers - and heroes come in many disguises. |
