My thoughts:
This is book 4 in the New York Ever After series, but you don't need to have the read the previous books to be able to follow and enjoy this touching story.In the weeks before Christmas, Holly is starting out as a freelance writer, having just given up her well-paid job and the lifestyle which goes with it. Her boyfriend, Pierre, is an ambitious and highly motivated hotel manager who does not understand Holly's need to try something for herself. Throughout, he seems intent on channelling her back into regular, permanent employment without considering what she really wants.
Holly's first freelance assignment takes her to Inglenook Falls, a small town with a close-knit community where people look out for each other... all except from Mitch, the strange bearded man who lives in a log cabin at the edge of town. He keeps himself to himself, and avoids interaction with the outside world whenever he can.
Whilst walking about the town taking photographs, Holly finds herself outside the little log cabin where Mitch lives. When he appears she is terrified, and tries to run away, but slips and falls, knocking herself unconscious. He scoops her up and looks after her until she is able to go back to her lodgings. Once safely back amongst her friends, she starts to think about how Mitch might be helped to rejoin the community.
We learn about Mitch's past, and begin to understand why he has cut himself off from the rest of the world. Holly takes her first steps as a freelancer, but cannot get this man out of her mind, and their paths seem destined to cross. I found myself wishing for miracles for both Holly and Mitch as I got to know them.
I could feel the approach of 'Christmas' throughout the book - well Mitch does run a Christmas tree farm and snow is falling! This is a lovely tale in time for the holidays that left me feeling warm and Christmasy.
