The blurb:

Book cover for the novel Reach for a star
What if your dreams were so close you could reach out and touch them?

How could anyone resist Michael Tennant, with his hypnotic blue eyes and voice like molten chocolate? Jessie Simmons certainly can’t. But Jessie’s a single mum who can’t sing to save her life – there’s no way she’ll ever cross paths with the star tenor.

At least that’s what she thinks until she’s unexpectedly invited to take part in a new reality TV show. The premise? Professional singers teach hopeless amateurs how to sing. The surprise? Jessie’s partner is none other than Michael Tennant!

As she becomes better acquainted with the man behind the voice, will Jessie find out the hard way that you should never meet your idols? Or will she get more than she bargained for?

My thoughts:

In the acknowledgements section for Reach for a Star, Freeman tells us that this is the first book she ever wrote, but in the ten years since it was written, this is the first time it has come to press.

Well, it was worth waiting for! This is another happy-ending romance which kept me enthralled from start to finish.

Jessie Simmons is a divorced mum-of-two boys, Jack and Luke. They set her up by entering her into a national singing competition on the television. The competition involves being mentored by a professional for a week, and singing a duet together on the live show. One of the professionals is Michael Tennant, an internationally famous tenor, and Jessie has a huge crush on him.

Jessie arrives at the studio to find she is paired with Michael. He seems aloof, and she's not about to throw herself at him. As they work together to perfect her performance, Jessie sees another side to Michael; a caring, considerate side.

The inevitable happens, and they become lovers. But how do they keep this going with Micheal going on tour for eight months after the live show? They both worry about how they will be able to carry on seeing each other. There are a number of issues to overcome; his gruelling schedule, the distance between them, her boys, the differences in their life styles, are just a few of the issues which crop up. There is also outside interference in the shape of Georgina, Michael's very attractive PA, who also seems hell-bent on getting her claws into him.

Reach for a Star pulled on my heartstrings as I waited for signs that there would be a happy ending. And there were times when it did not seem at all likely.

A well-written, happy-ending story with well-drawn, likeable, and believable characters that I found difficult to put down.

A former pharmacist, I’m now a medical writer who also writes romance. Some days a racing heart is a medical condition, others it’s the reaction to a hunky hero.

With two teenage boys and a husband who asks every Valentine’s Day whether he has to buy a card (yes, he does), any romance is all in my head. Then again, his unstinting support of my career change proves love isn't always about hearts and flowers - and heroes come in many disguises.
