For once, Kate Peters would like a happy, family Christmas; the kind of Christmas seen in the movies. She wants harmony and happiness, smiling, glowing faces, tables groaning with food, carol singing around the tree. She wants love, kindness, and goodwill to all men, especially in her own house.
What she doesn’t want is drama. Absolutely no drama, whatsoever.
But what she gets is three stroppy children, two equally stroppy grandmothers, a husband who can’t manage to change a lightbulb, and Pepe the poodle.
It’s no wonder she feels unappreciated, overworked, and ignored. At the end of her tinsel-coated tether, and with the only Christmas spirit being in the form of a bottle of raspberry gin, Kate decides to leave them to it, and see how they manage without her.
A quiet little hotel somewhere near the sea, where she can pretend Christmas doesn’t exist, is just the thing she needs. Isn’t it?

My thoughts:
I wanted to read A Typical Family Christmas because I found the cover very appealing, and the blurb sounded comical... and a tad familiar. The title suggests that the kind of Christmases Kate Peters gets, are not the sort she deserves, and this year looks to be no exception! For anyone who has ever laid on a Christmas celebration, hoping that the turkey you're stuffing with a vengeance will provide you with much needed stress-relief, and prevent you from throttling your guests... this one is for you! Just sit back and enjoy as you watch the drama unfold for someone else... Kate Peters.
I absolutely loved this story. I managed to read it in two days - unusual for me - but I could not, and didn't want to put it down! Davies writes with an easy style and humour that greatly appeals to me. A Typical Family Christmas is funny and entertaining, and while it may be fictional, it felt very plausible. It resurrected memories of my own Christmas nightmares and child-rearing days. I was glad that it was happening to somebody else and not me!
Kate Peters is a lovely, caring person, run-ragged by her quarrelling, teenage children; taken for granted by her husband and her own mother; and constantly criticised by her fault-finding mother-in-law. Even her mother's badly-behaved dog sinks his teeth into her!
I could feel Kate's strong emotional ties to her family responsibilities and duties imprisoning her; everyone demanding their own wants and needs be met, without considering anyone else. Least of all Kate.
Hearing Kate's husband Brett's side of the story is interesting and familiar too. He considers he contributes enough by going to work and bringing home four times the salary that Kate does. At home, he keeps the garden tidy; he says that all Kate has to do is plump up some cushions, pour herself a drink, and sit in the sun while he works in the garden. He also thinks that parenting is best left to Kate as she handles it better. In fact, the kids take full advantage of his lack of parenting, thereby making Kate's life more difficult by the day.
It took me a while to settle down to really enjoy the mayhem Kate's family were causing because I was so incensed by the way they, especially her daughters, were treating her. I actually applauded her when she quietly absconded to Brixham, leaving them all to sort themselves out.
Of course, it's Christmas, and everything does end happily for Kate and her family. How long it lasts is probably another story yet to be told!
