Written in the third person, Christmas Kisses on Hollywell Hill is an amusing story about an aspiring actress and a celebrity chef falling in love.Kirsty Castille has been working as the front end of a horse in pantomime, and also a Christmas turkey, promoting sales for a local shop. Money is tight, and she's scouring the shelves in the supermarket looking for a bargain meal when she crosses paths with an attractive man.
The attractive man is Jake. Recently separated from his beautiful but avaricious and cheating wife, Tessa. Romance isn't on his mind. He is in the process of setting up his new business in St Albans, having relocated from London.
There's a fair bit of angst with the 'will-they-won't they', as they almost overcome their difficulties to be together, that had me rooting for them as a couple.
There are some interesting secondary characters - my favourite, in a 'love-to-hate' way, being Matt, who is such a player. Kirsty is very forgiving of his behaviour, but I'm not sure I could put aside his faults and remain friends with him. Another character I disliked immensely was the predatory Teresa Aurora, a chat show host with an axe to grind.
This is a very enjoyable story that I wouldn't necessarily pigeonhole as a Christmas story. Although it is set over the festive period, it is less about the season than the couple's road to romance.
Definitely one for lovers of romantic comedies.
