Here we have another book series where I've bumbled in, starting with Book 5 instead of Book 1! No matter. This book can easily be read as a standalone, and having finished this, I'm putting the others in this series on my TBR list.The story is told in the first person, from the perspective of Katje Skorobogatova (or Kate Baker as she is now calling herself). Katje has had a troubled past, and having been thrown over by her previous boyfriend, Jasper, because she does not meet with his mother's approval, Katje lacks self-confidence, and is ashamed of her heritage.
She has hidden away since the breakup, but her grandmother has encouraged her to apply for a job in a newly set-up bakery in Sunnybrook, in a bid to help raise her low self-esteem. Katje fills in the job application using the name Kate Baker, but does not intend to apply. Her grandmother finds the application and sends it in without reading it. So... Kate Baker has applied for the job.
The bakery owner, Ellie, offers Kate the job, but it later transpires that she has offered the job to Madison as well. It is therefore decided that they are both on a two-month trial and at the end, one of them will be asked to leave.
Kate and Madison are installed in a little house owned by Jaz and Harry. The couple are away for two months, and have offered Ellie's new employees the use of their home for the duration. This is the story of two completely different personalities living and working together as they compete for the same job.
I loved this novella. The story flows nicely, and it is well-written. Most of the characters are immediately likeable. I loved Katje/Kate from the outset, as well as Ellie, Fen and Richard. Madison on the other hand, is all kinds of trouble, and from her behaviour when we first meet her in the bakery, I was very surprised that Ellie hired her. She is not my cup of tea at all, and I still wouldn't trust her.
I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a cosy romcom, and will definitely be adding the rest of The Little Duck Pond Cafe series to my reading list.
