My thoughts:
This is the third book in the Friendships Online series. The Dinner in the Sky is told in the first person from the perspective of Constance Jeffries, an author and mum to Charlie, a beautiful little boy on the autistic spectrum.How I wish I'd made the time to read the first two books in this series before embarking on this one! Although there is a refresher at the beginning of this book, I felt I'd missed discovering the kind of detail that would have made me instantly warm to the various characters, and want to know their story. Starting on Book 3, it took me longer to get into this story, so I would advise readers to definitely start at the beginning with The Big Event, followed by The Weekend Spa Break, to fully appreciate this well-written, engaging story which played with all my emotions.
John-Ligali has weaved in some interesting facts about bringing up a child with autism. It's not preachy, but it is eye-opening.
As well as the romantic and comedy aspects, there was suspense, pathos, deceit in relationships, and a happy-ending - although this happy-ending could be the start of a new book in this series!
I felt great sadness for Karmel, a lady of a certain age, trying desperately to remain youthful in a bid to hang on to her toyboy, who she imagined would dump her as soon as he realised her true age.
Suspense built as Constance received a number of nasty messages via Twitter. I was completely absorbed in trying to uncover the identity of the malicious tweeter. I followed all the clues and red herrings, and had multiple suspects in mind right up to the reveal! Unfortunately and unusually, none of the names on my list of suspects were the real culprit. Constance eventually realises who her tormentor is, but even then, I was still still in the dark until she named the miscreant.
The Dinner in the Sky was a completely enthralling read, and one I'd recommend, preferably after you've read the first two books in this series!
