My thoughts:
Told in the third person, The Christmas Sisters is the story of three sisters, with different things going on in their lives, coming home to their adoptive parents home, the Glensay Lodge, in the Scottish Highlands, for what turns out to be a healing Christmas reunion.Twenty-five years ago, their parents died in an accident, which almost took their adoptive mother, Suzanne, as well. Suzanne suffers from survivor's guilt to this day, and the story begins with Suzanne having a nightmare about the accident. Her wonderful husband, Stewart, calms her as he has done these last twenty-five years.
Posy, the youngest, lives in the loft of a converted barn in the grounds of the Glensay Lodge where they grew up. She works in Suzanne's busy cafe, and helps with the animals. Everyone expects her to take over the cafe when Suzanne retires. Posy is adventurous, a good climber like her father, but she feels tied to Suzanne and Stewart out of a sense of duty. An opportunity has come up for her, but she is worried about hurting her parents who have done so much for her and her sisters.
The middle child, Beth, has been a stay-at-home parent for seven years and feels isolated in that role. Everyone else has adult conversations, but her day revolves around the children and their needs. Beth has been offered the opportunity to work for her old boss in her new company, and sees this as a way of regaining some of herself.
Hannah, the eldest, is the typical, single, high-achieving career woman. She is closer to Stewart than Suzanne, and whilst she thinks of them as her parents, she does not call Suzanne 'Mom'. This hurts Suzanne, but she would never say so. Beth thinks Hannah has the perfect life. Except she doesn't. Hannah, despite her outward appearance, has major insecurities. She has been seeing a work colleague, Adam, on the quiet, and an unexpected turn of events sees her rushing home for the holidays.
This is a lovely story about family, whether related by blood or not. The sisters finally open up to each other, and learn a lot about each other and themselves. We see barriers being broken down, the girls supporting each other and Suzanne, and what promises to be the best Christmas in a long time.
I chose to read this book based on my enjoyment of Sleigh Bells in the Snow, and having read excerpts from several of Morgan's other books. However, I was slightly disappointed with my choice. Whilst what I had read before had engaged me from the start, I found The Christmas Sisters took me a while to get into. There are lots of issues to resolve, and it does have a happy ending, but it lacked early momentum that would have had me on board from the start.
