I am a big fan of Sue Wickstead's children's story books, and recently bought a couple of paperback copies of Barty Barton The Bear That Was Loved Too Much for my grandchildren to enjoy.
The blurb:
What happens when you outgrow your teddy bear? Will you let it go?
Barty was a special teddy bear.
He was soft, cuddly, and always made everyone smile.
All the loving cuddles had flattened him over time, and his nose bent to one side and his paws needed repairing.
But he was too full of memories to be thrown away.
Thomas always loved Barty, but he grew up and was going to be a daddy himself.
Would he want Barty for his new baby?
My thoughts:
In a departure from her play bus stories, Ms Wickstead's latest story tells of an old and well-worn teddy bear being cleaned and repaired before being passed on to the original owner's young son to love. When Thomas tells his mother that he is going to be a daddy, the grandmother-to-be asks if he would like to have his special teddy which she has been keeping for him. Thomas thinks the teddy will be too tatty, but his mother decides to put Barty, and all the other soft toys she has saved for Thomas, into the washing machine to clean them up before she starts to repair them. Barty is apprehensive about going into the washing machine, but his friends are with him, and after his little adventure, he is sewn back together again, and presented to Thomas's baby, Alexander.
Barty Barton The Bear That Was Loved Too Much is another beautifully illustrated and engaging story, which I'm sure will appeal to younger readers and remind older readers of their much-loved childhood soft toys. And yes, you will find the occasional red bus amongst the illustrations!
Author Bio – Sue Wickstead
Sue once worked with a play charity which operated on a double-decker bus. This led her to write the photographic history book about the project. The 'Bewbush Playbus' book was published in 2012.
Sue then began to write a fictional tale about the bus. 'Jay-Jay the Supersonic Bus', his number plate JJK261 gave him his name and has now been followed by more picture books which all indeed have a bus connection as well as links to her teaching journey.

Did you ever have a favoutite toy, maybe a teddy bear?
ReplyDeleteI did, she was called MacMac and is full of straw. she needs a few repairs of her own but definately wont't go in the washing machine!
