As they pursue answers, Bella and Jax find several suspects who might have wanted to make the victim suffer for his lethal arrogance.

A Little bit of History
My Arabella Stewart Historical Mystery series is set after the Great War (World War I). The war years, and the those immediately afterward, saw many changes for women around the world.
In Great Britain, most men of a certain age served in the military, which left many jobs vacant. Among the employment areas open to women were manufacturing (including munitions), transportation, agriculture, and law enforcement.
The United States did not enter the war until April 1917, but American women also found new jobs available to them in industry and transportation. In addition, some served as Navy yeoman and as Army Signal Corps operators (my main character Bella’s role).
Women from various nations were near the front as nurses, ambulance drivers, operators, and in other support roles. “Donut Dollies” served coffee and donuts to soldiers, often very close to the trenches. Others took on “war work” at home. That included farming and gardening to keep food production high. Homemakers were encouraged to plan meals around rationing rules.
On the political front, British women over 30 got the right to vote in February 1918. In the United States, women finally got the same voting rights as men in August 1920.
Although many ladies lost their new jobs when men returned home, the movement for more equality continued. In creating characters, especially those who served near the front, I remain cognizant of how they would react to the changing roles, and also to resistance to those changes from men and other women.

 D.S. Lang, a native Ohioan, has been making up stories since she was a little girl, and she still is! Along the way, she studied English and social studies as an undergrad. After graduate school, she went on to teach government and American history in high school. She also taught English at the junior high, high school, and college levels. In addition, she has worked as a program coordinator, golf shop manager, and online tutor. Now, she spends much of her time reading, researching, and writing. Most recently, she has delved into the Great War era and the years immediately after it. Her Arabella Stewart Historical Mystery Series was inspired by her Great Uncle Brice who served in the American Expeditionary Force during World War One, and by her love of historical mysteries. In her spare time, she loves to spend time with family and friends, including her dog Izzy. |
