Maybe it’s due to Nessa’s habit of taking in troubled runaways, like ex-soldier Crispin, for next to nothing. Or perhaps her highly-strung sister Lowena is right – caravans named after Beatles’ songs and homegrown pears are not enough to turn the farm into a tourist haven.
Then another troubled runaway turns up, posing the greatest threat yet. Ex-musician Ward Spencer from Tennessee is certainly intriguing, but could his plans to put nearby Tregereth House on the map mean Pear Tree Farm is finished – or does his arrival signal a second lease of life, and not just for Nessa’s business?

Thank you so much Deborah for inviting me to stop by your blog for a chat and to share an extract from my new trans-Atlantic romance ‘A Cornish Summer at Pear Tree Farm’. It’s set in the fictional Polgarth Valley in Cornwall, the beautiful part of south-west England where I grew up. The campsite Nessa Vivian inherited from her parents is struggling and when fascinating American ex-country music star, Ward Spencer buys the adjoining property her safe little world is turned on its head in more ways than one. The instant sizzling attraction between them clashes with his plans to turn Tregereth into a fancier version of her own business and the question becomes what she intends to do about both of them!
The extract I want to share revolves around Nessa’s newfound determination to rise to the challenge and turn Pear Tree Farm into a flourishing business. She’s well aware things need to change and that starts with the cluttered farmhouse.
EXTRACT FROM ‘A CORNISH SUMMER AT PEAR TREE FARM’
Her parents’ overstuffed wardrobe stared back at Nessa as if daring her to spring open the doors.
‘You’re not Mum. It’s time to make it your own.’
Lowena’s words had stuck in her head and niggled away until she’d been forced to concede her sister had a point. The five bedrooms were crammed to overflowing and it was impossible to get into the attic and downstairs wasn’t much better. It’d always been necessary to move a pile of clothes or magazines before sitting down and the dining room hadn’t been used in forever because that was the last-ditch storage spot when everywhere else filled up.
She dragged armfuls of clothes on the bed and started to jam them into a black plastic bag. Her determination faltered when she came across the suit her mum wore to Lowena’s wedding. Nessa stroked the soft purple silk before folding it and setting to one side. Her heart missed another beat when she unearthed her father’s old brown- and cream- checked cardigan. She lifted it to her nose and savoured the earthy scent of his pipe lingering in the faded wool. Saving two things struck her as a reasonable compromise. Through a mist of tears she kept going and after a couple of hours this first and hardest room was finished. It took several trips to haul the mountain of bags downstairs but thankfully the bins would be emptied on Monday.
‘Knock, knock. Anyone home?’ Polly breezed in through the front door. ‘Bloody hell what’ve you been up to?’ Her friend gawped at the mound of black bags filling the hall.
‘I’ve started on a clear-out.’
‘Good for you. It’s about time.’
‘What do you mean?’
‘I wondered how long it’d be before you’d sort your mum and dad’s stuff. You know I loved them dearly but I never understood how they could let things get this bad.’ Polly heaved a sigh. ‘They were one as bad as the other and couldn’t pass up a charity shop, a car boot sale or a flea market to save their lives. If it wasn’t Ethel with her knickknacks it was your dad with his old records and local history books. I bet you’ve got all sorts of plans to spruce it up?’
‘Not really. I mean … I’ve no clue.’ Nessa stammered over her reply.
‘There’s no rush.’ Her friend chuckled. ‘You’ve a lot more to clear out before you get that far. Put the kettle on and you can tell me what put a rocket up you.’
For the last three years she’d kept things as they were but that wasn’t working on so many different levels. After she’d tackled the house her next task was to make the business more profitable. She’d been content to let things drift far too long but all of a sudden that wasn’t enough.
