The blurb:

Daisy Daydream the Nursery Rhyme Bus

Daisy was a happy red bus who loved travelling the busy streets of London.

When newer and shinier buses came along, the older buses like Daisy began to disappear.

Would Daisy become one of the forgotten buses, or was something else planned for her?

My thoughts:

In this story, Daisy Daydream is born when an old London bus undergoes a refurbishment, after it has been replaced by more modern buses which only need a driver - the old style buses needed a driver and a conductor.

Like Jay-Jay before her, she is sent to a garage to be repainted and fitted with equipment which will transform her into a playbus. She gets a rather different makeover to Jay-Jay, and is decorated with nursery rhyme characters. Once fully fitted and ready for use, there is an opening ceremony, and to Daisy's delight, Jay-Jay and his driver Alex come along to wish her well in her new role.

Another super book from Sue Wickstead. Ms Wickstead's books never fail to entertain and educate at the same time. I love the beautiful illustrations in this book, and think they will provide a great talking point for inquisitive young readers. I thought the attention to detail in these pictures was amazing. On page 6, for example, there is a street scene with traffic lights, a pelican crossing, a yellow box junction, a red route, a litter bin, a dropped kerb, a woman with a pull-along shopping trolley, the new style bus and more...

At the back of the book is a little bit of history about the real Daisy Daydream playbus, which is the inspiration for Ms Wickstead's stories.

The role of the conductor will probably have to be explained to children, as buses have, for quite some time now, been driver-only operated.

Daisy Daydream The Nursery Rhyme Bus is written at a level that young children will easily be able to understand, and more confident young readers will be able to read and enjoy for themselves. Highly recommended.

Author Bio – Sue Wickstead

I am a teacher and an author and have currently written six children’s picture books with a bus theme.

For over 20 years, alongside my teaching career, I worked with a Children’s Charity, The Bewbush Playbus Association, which led me to write a photographic history book about it.

I soon found that many children had never been on a bus before, let alone a ‘Playbus’ and they wanted to know more. I decided to write a fictional tale about the bus, his number plate JJK261 gave him his name.

‘Jay-Jay the Supersonic Bus,’ came out in print in 2014. It is the story behind the original bus and is his journey from a scrap-yard to being changed into a playbus for children to play in. From Fact to fiction the bus journey continued.

This story has now been followed by five more picture books.

I also undertake events and author bookings and love to share the story. There are also a few more stories in the writing process, with links to real events and buses.

The story has been read in many schools in the south-East of England, where I teach as a cover teacher, it is always well received and certainly different.

  1. Thank you for the review of Daisy Daydream.
I'm glad you noticed all the details in the illustrations.
This is the start of my Playbus journey as this wa the bus that I painted.
My children went to the playgroup on the real Playbus, and as they were young, we chose our favourite rhymes to share.I designed the livery but was able to paint the white dasies.
